How a car is opened properly
An inflatable wedge goes into the top corner of the door frame and opens a gap of a few millimetres. A long reach tool passes through that gap and operates the interior handle, the lock button or the unlock switch, depending on the vehicle. The glass is never touched, the weather strip is not pulled away from the frame, and there is nothing to repair afterwards.
What causes damage is the wrong approach: a slim jim pushed down inside the door skin, which on a modern car runs straight into wiring looms, side airbag sensors and window regulators. That is why a cheap job can turn into a four-figure repair.
